Artist's Comments

Admittedly, one of my more prominant artistic favorites is Disney's Gargoyles. It was just a great show on most fronts, and featured some truly inventive character designs and plot threads. Sure, there was the occasional giant Oberon dressed like a reject from "The Birdcage" attacking New York City, but hell, even Batman had it's Clock King.

So what we have here is a pic that was drawn and colored pretty quickly, and specifically for the MGC (Monthly Gargoyles Contest, for the uninitiated). It was inspired in whole by the scene from "300" in which Leonidas stands in the face of a rainstorm holding up his sheild to...well, sheild him from the rain. In general it came out as well as I'd hoped it would, but its not without its flaws. Namely, that God-awful lightning.

It's my style in most cases to color things traditionally, i.e. not digitally. Prismacolor Markers on Bristolboard are my usual suspects, with color pencil highlights (the rain itself is all colored pencil) here and there. Took me YEARS to figure out a proper skin color for Goliath/Angela from Prisma's catelog, but I've settled on "cornflower".

So yeah, I'm pretty happy with this. His torso isn't completely straight, and given the chance I'd make his arm do something more interesting. But I do love how the hair and head in general came out, so it ain't too shabby.

That's amazing! Gargoyles kicks ass.

So you did that all with just markers?
:iconlexiplexi:
Sorry I meant "How do you do that with markers?"

A truly inspirational piece. This is also one of the few Goliath portraits that vividly portray his face the way it is supposed to look: rugged, intelligent, a bit brooding, and strikingly handsom. The wings and body are formidable and well proportioned, much like the bust you are in the process of creating now. All too often I see a Goliath that seems strangely deflated and lacking in definition: if anything, this piece is almost too detailed, as if the artist were standing in the rain alongside the gargoyle. The consistency is practically flawless: the rain, his hair, and the placement of his wing are all in sync with each other, as is the lighting. Although I might have chosen a different title for the piece, it still speaks for itself: powerful. There's a reason why this gargoyle is the leader of the Manhattan clan, and you've reminded us why with your artwork. Excellent work, Mr. vp1940.

That's great.
I love the colouring.

It's strange ... I never really liked goliath when I was a child.
Now he's one of my favourite characters.
